So, every year during the [community profile] snowflake_challenge, a whole bunch of people ask for folk to write up a Transformative Works Statement as part of their fannish wishlist. The idea behind it is that it can be hard to get in touch with people now that fandom is so spread out, people don’t always cling to their usernames for decades, and some people just get really nervous asking strangers for stuff, so if you have a cleanly stated policy on how you feel about remixing, podficcing, and translations, it can take the guesswork and anxiety out of the process. There’s a bunch more info on the topic on Fanlore, and in posts by [personal profile] analise010 and [personal profile] sophinisba that you can check out for more articulated and nuanced discussions on why people (podficcers especially) appreciate them.

My feelings on the matter are as follows (and have last been updated November 2024):

I give blanket permission for anyone to make transformative works based on any of my fic, provided they cite me as the author of the original work, link back to the original work, and share a link with me so that I can squee over it. Podfic to your heart’s content! (If you have questions about changing wording/typos/mistakes, please ask me! I probably need to fix it in the original, too). Make all the translations! Art or vid any scene that speaks to you! Straight up take prompts and story premises that I’ve used (you don’t have to link for this; just do it).

My archive preference is AO3. Please don’t rearchive/repost my fics to other sites (including Tumblr and FFN); I choose certain archives for very specific reasons, and I like to keep track of where my words are. I make exceptions for translations (because non-English-speaking fandoms sometimes hang out elsewhere), and in those cases, please ask me! I would love to hear about where your fandom hangs out, and what your archive is like before you post. If you’re posting to AO3, they have great “Inspired By” and “Translated from” functions on the site that I would prefer to use to connect our works.

I would prefer to be asked about remixes, sequels, prequels, and other derivative fics written in the same universe/timeline as my works. This isn’t to say that you can’t do it, but to be honest, it makes me uncomfortable and I’d rather do something collaborative with you. You can contact me privately through FFN’s PM system or DW’s PM system, or publically by leaving me a comment on the work in question. I check those inboxes regularly and make a habit of replying to people.
